Motorola Inspires Girl Scouts with STEM Grant

Women in the math and science career fields in the U.S. are still massively underrepresented. Girl Scouts and Motorola have teamed up to change that! Earlier this year, the Motorola Solutions Foundation provided a $10,000 grant towards local programming for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math).
STEM Expo Interactive Activity
This grant has been put to work with educational programming such as our council’s STEM Expo. At the 4th annual expo, held on October 24, attendees came out to enjoy a diverse range of interactive demonstrations and robotics activities. The 2,200 people in attendance explored physics with a hovercraft, engineering with a human hamster wheel and technology with virtual reality 3D goggle. With these and many more interesting activities, our goal was to bring STEM to life and help girls see themselves in these fields.

Some of the STEM Expo presenters were our council’s own robotics team members. The Motorola grant supports these girl-only robotics groups, comprised of dedicated girls eager to learn more about math and science.
GENIUS Robotics Team at the STEM Expo
Teams such as GENIUS (Girls Exploring New Ideas Using Science), design and build robots by themselves and compete all over the state. In fact, earlier this year, the GENIUS team did so well in Atlanta’s FIRST Tech Challenge that they were invited to compete in the Southern Regional competition in San Antonio, Texas.

We are seeing more girls express an interest in exploring STEM careers. With grants like this one, we will be able to continue to bring these opportunities to our Greater Atlanta girls and spark an interest that will last a lifetime.
