Girl Scouts partners with Google to Build the Coders of Tomorrow

The need for coders in the workforce continues to increase. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, by the time girls currently enrolled in middles school go to college, there will be one million more Computer Science jobs than computer scientists available. But surprisingly, less than 1% of high school girls are interested in pursuing a degree in the field. That’s a huge problem for girls and humanity. We can’t let girls’ voices to be absent from our increasingly-digital future. That’s where Made with Code comes in.

It’s a social initiative that Google launched designed to inspire millions of girls to experience the power of code. The goal is to demonstrate how coding can help them to pursue, and reach their dreams. Made with Code will encourage girls to write their own future and show them that it can take them anywhere!

As a part of this project, Girl Scouts of Greater Atlanta received a $50,000 grant to help facilitate programming that allows girls to explore their interests in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) and express their creativity through code. In fact, on October 24, we will be hosting the 2015 STEM Expo, featuring a Hack-a-thon where girls will be able to solve real world problems through coding projects.

Through this initiative, we were able to reach more than 10,000 girls this past year, one of which is Kiersten Brown. This 14-year-old is doing some amazing things. The Silver Award recipient was invited to the Google headquarters in California because of her awesome work with code.

Thank you, Google and Made with Code for helping show the world that girls can do anything in any field!
